Gunji to Om Parvat - A Roadtrip to the holy mountains!

Roadtrip from Gunji to Om Parvat – Off-Road Adventures and Divine Encounters

– Episode 3

Nestled deep within the pristine Himalayas, our expedition from Gunji to Om Parvat was nothing short of an adventurous odyssey. Starting early morning around 6am from the base camp, we set out with a sense of anticipation, eager to explore the sacred and scenic terrains en route to one of the most revered peaks, Om Parvat. The camp guys told us that the breakfast would only be ready by 8am and that was too late to start the journey as we had a long way to go.. so we skipped the breakfast and started our journey.

The Sacred "Om Parvat" Om Namah Shivaay!

It is believed that one can see the whole family of Shiva on this mountain. In the center you see "OM" and on the right side of the mountain, you see Ganpati bhagwan.

Route Details: Gunji -> Om Parvat - Gunji -> Dharchulla (Time taken - 4-5 hrs)

First stop was the check post around 1km from the camp at Gunji. It took really long time around 40-45 mins to show the permit and move forward. This is where everybody has to show the permits and there was a long queue of the taxi guys and then the police guys had to check each of the ID's and then the papers so it took long. After we cleared the check post we started our further journey. The road from here was totally off-road with mud and gravel and rocky terrain. Thankfully, our sturdy SUV with good ground clearance handled the terrain with ease, but it was a reminder that this journey demands respect and preparation. We took it easy as we were not in a rush and didn't wanted to get caught in the rush of taxi guys. We enjoyed the journey, took multiple photo stops as the place was beautiful.

Nestled in a serene landscape, this small camping spot (for locals) lies at the base of majestic snowy mountains. The tranquil atmosphere and breathtaking views create a picturesque setting that feels like a scene from a fairytale.

The journey to the nearby heavenly valleys is filled with enchanting sights, where nature's beauty is on full display. As you travel through winding paths and lush meadows, the anticipation of reaching the valleys adds to the adventure.

Enroute Stop at Kali Nadi Mata Temple

Our journey included a meaningful pause at the serene Kali Nadi Mata Temple, en route to Om Parvat. The calmness of the temple and the gentle flowing river nearby offered a spiritual respite amidst the rugged landscape. It was a soothing experience, connecting us further with the divine and the nature that surrounds us. The temple is built very long ago and has a vibe. Even though its a small temple, a lot of pilgrims including local population come here. It wasn't very crowded like some of the other commercial temples now a days so had a good vibe. Inside the temple, there are a few idols of the holy Kali Nadi Mata, so we took the blessings and continued further. The temple compound also has a Army run canteen and they serve some light snacks. As we were hungry now, we thought to fill our tummies here before continuing further.

Scenic Beauty and Adventure

As we drove through this untamed terrain, the breathtaking vistas kept us captivated. The mountains towering around us seemed to whisper ancient secrets, while the crisp mountain air invigorated our senses. The landscape showcased a mix of wildflower-covered meadows, steep slopes, and remote hamlets, each offering a unique photo opportunity. Several times, we slowed down to capture the stunning scenery, realizing that each snapshot was a testament to earth’s raw beauty.

Om Parvat was just an hour away from here, and we moved forward with reverence and gratitude in our hearts. As we approached the sacred mountain, the divine presence filled us with a sense of peace and bliss. When we first glimpsed Om Parvat, it was nothing short of miraculous — nature’s sacred "OM" carved by glaciers, a divine symbol that has been worshipped and revered for ages.

Seeing this breathtakingly beautiful sight with our own eyes was an extraordinary blessing. We felt enveloped in divine grace, humbled by the sacred energy emanating from the mountain. We paused here to offer our prayers, seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva and the divine consciousness that pervades this holy place. With hearts full of gratitude, we took a few pooja offerings, captured divine blessings in our souls, and paid our respects.

In that sacred moment, we felt a profound connection with the divine — a moment of pure bliss and spiritual awakening. We left with our hearts overflowing with thankfulness, knowing we were truly blessed to witness and experience such divine magnificence. Om Namah Shivaya!

On our way back to Gunji..

Just a photo opp and Coffee break en-route!

After this, we started our return journey to Gunji and decided to go to Munsiyari and Jageshwar Dham (https://hi.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A4%9C%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%97%E0%A5%87%E0%A4%B6%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B5%E0%A4%B0_%E0%A4%A7%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%AE,_%E0%A4%85%E0%A4%B2%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%AE%E0%A5%8B%E0%A4%A1%E0%A4%BC%E0%A4%BE) which is another Lord Shiva's Jyothirling.

The ride back to Gunji was same route and we could return in around 1.5 hrs. After clearing the check-post at Gunji, we started towards Dharchulla. The ride back took 4-5 hours and in-between we had stopped for lunch at a small local dhabha where we had one of the best paratha's in this world. The paratha's were so yummy that we kept on ordering and really enjoyed the feast.

Yummy.. Aloo parathas.. with Local Chilly Chutney..

After a sumptuous meal, we continued our journey back to Dharchulla where we stayed in the same KMVN hotel that we stayed while coming to Adi Kailash. We got the rooms for Rs. 4500 each and was a good stay overall.

Reflecting on the Journey

We spent the rest of the evening discussing about the trip and shared experiences with each other. By now me and Rishi and our families had become friends and we truly enjoyed our company and decided to go further to Munsiyari together for another day or two.

This off-road trek, filled with rugged terrains and divine sights, reinforced my belief that some of the most rewarding experiences come from venturing off the beaten path. It wasn’t just a drive; it was a communion with nature’s raw splendor and spiritual heritage, blending adventure with reverence.

Some tips for fellow roadies/travellers

Here are some practical tips for travelers and roadsters planning to explore the mountains in their own car, especially in high-altitude regions like Adi Kailash and Om Parvat:

Tips for Mountain Road to Adi Kailsh or any other place in Your Own Car

1. Vehicle Preparation

- Ensure your vehicle is in top condition — check brakes, tires (preferably with good tread and ground clearance), coolant, and engine fluid levels.

- Carry essential spare parts like a spare tire, sand ladder, tyre inflator, jack, and basic tools. A Jerry can for Diesel/Petrol depending upon the capacity of your vehicle. There are no petrol bunks after Dharchulla.

2. Driving Tips

- Drive cautiously, especially on steep, uneven, or off-road sections. Use low gears to control speed on descents and ascents.

- Keep your windows clean for maximum visibility.

- Use headlights in foggy or low-visibility conditions.

3. Weather and Road Conditions

- Check weather forecasts before starting your journey. Avoid traveling during heavy rain, snow, or fog.

- Be prepared for sudden weather changes — carry rain gear and warm clothing.

4. Altitude and Acclimatization

- Ascend gradually, allowing your body time to acclimatize to higher altitudes.

- Take regular breaks to breathe deeply and hydrate.

Essential Supplies and Food/Snacks for Remote Mountain Travel

1. Food and Drink

- Carry dry, energy-rich snacks like nuts, dried fruits, energy bars, chocolates, and biscuits.

- Keep some ready-to-eat meals like instant noodles, soups, or biscuits for emergencies.

- Always have bottled water or a water purifier with you.

2. Additional Supplies

- Electrolyte drinks or rehydration salts to combat dehydration at high altitudes.

- Basic medicines like pain relievers, altitude sickness medication (e.g., acetazolamide – Diamox, after consulting a doctor), antiseptics, and bandages.

3. Important Tips for Places with Limited Food Options

- Pack a small portable stove or thermos for hot drinks/food if you prefer freshly brewed tea/coffee or soups.

- Consider carrying some packaged, long-lasting food items to stay energized during long stretches without eateries.

Special Tips for High-Altitude Areas (Addressing AMS)

- Hydration: Drink plenty of water — dehydration worsens AMS symptoms.

- Gradual Ascent: Climb slowly, allowing time for your body to acclimatize. If you experience headache, dizziness, nausea, or fatigue, rest and avoid further ascent.

- Medication: Carry and know how to use medications like Diamox (consult your doctor beforehand).

- Recognize Symptoms: Be vigilant for early signs of AMS — headache, nausea, dizziness, difficulty sleeping. Immediate descent is the best remedy if symptoms worsen.

- Oxygen: If available, use supplemental oxygen or oxygen concentrators; otherwise, prioritize descending to lower altitudes.

General Tips

- Keep your phone charged and carry a power bank.

- Always inform someone about your travel plans and expected arrival times.

- Be respectful of local customs and environment — avoid littering and preserve the pristine nature.

Traveling in the mountains is a blissful experience, but safety and preparedness are key to making it memorable and safe. Happy and safe journeys!

Stay tuned for more tales from this Himalayan adventure as we continue our journey to Munsiyari, carrying stories of mountain majesty, sacred blessings, and the unforgettable thrill of exploring secluded wilderness.
