Camera: Nikon Z8, Lens: 70-200 f2.8

Why the Nikon Z8, D750 with Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 and 200-500mm f/5.6 Lenses is the Ultimate Combo for Wildlife Photography in Kenya's Masai Mara

In the heart of Kenya's iconic Masai Mara, where the rhythm of nature pulses through the sprawling savannahs and teeming wildlife roams free, there lies a photographer's paradise. For those seeking to immortalize the untamed beauty of this remarkable landscape, the choice of camera and lenses is paramount. Let's delve into why the Nikon Z8, complemented by the versatile Nikon D750, along with essential lenses such as the 70-200mm f/2.8 and 200-500mm f/5.6, forms the ultimate combination for wildlife photography in the Masai Mara.

Nikon Z8: Pushing the Boundaries of Resolution and Performance

At the forefront of our arsenal is the Nikon Z8, a powerhouse of photographic innovation that excels in capturing the intricate details and vibrant colors of the Masai Mara. With its unparalleled resolution and lightning-fast autofocus, the Z8 ensures that every moment is captured with stunning clarity and precision. Whether photographing distant wildlife or intimate close-ups, this mirrorless marvel delivers exceptional image quality that truly brings the wild to life.

We had great sightings of the Big Fives at Mara and much more and were able to capture with the combo we carried. This was my first trip focused on Wildlife with Z8 and I must say that I was blown away with its performance and results it produced. I've been shooting wildlife from past 15+ years but this was the first ver trip with a Mirroless camera and that too the first trip to Mara. I was really surprised by its shutter speed (30 fps) even though I didn't shoot on it continuously and mostly shot at 10 or 20fps as the subjects mostly were slow moving. Animal AutoFocus performed well if not excellently and why I say that is the camera takes some time to lock on the subject but once it locks it stays mostly.. but later I realised that it didn't focus when let's say there is grass in between and there were some shots where it missed focusing on the subject (animal) instead it focused on grass! We had few instances when Cheetah suddenly moved or jumped or ran and it was a great moment to capture with this feature. Some of the other features I really liked are quick shortcuts to shooting modes as if you're switching between wildlife and landscapes, you can configure the shooting modes accordingly and use them as needed.

I tried shooting Videos as well but small durations and those came very good as well. It was pretty easy and the auto focus for video also worked well. The Quality of the Videos is very very good and colors are brilliant. Here is a short clip of the video quality unprocessed https://youtu.be/FcQ0GAW87Ak

Z8's light weight came handy compared to D750 and was easy to use. The camera build quality is also great and sturdy. There were some instances where it bumped into the vehicle seats or roof or the grills and windows as we were sometime shooting while the vehicle was moving or suddenly moved when there was a sighting but the camera and lens both were undamaged. It is also weather proof I guess and performed well in rain and handled droplets well. We were caught in heavy rain in one the safari's and we had a cheetah sighting at the same time so the lens and camera worked well under the rain conditions though I kept it covered as well by rain cover but still there was some moisture that went inside the cover.. Also, it handles dust very well. Mara is very dusty and sometimes it can be really like a dust storm specially when you pass other vehicles or they overtake you. Even though we protected the camera and lens mostly from dust but still there were many instances where it was fully exposed to it and handled well without any issues for the entire trip. I used to keep it clean during the trip by a microfiber cloth and clean the lens by Zeiss Cleaning vibes (https://amzn.to/3w2Wz4F). Overall the camera performed beyond my expectations for the entire trip but there's a great learning still to be done to get the best potential of this marvellous machine.

Nikon D750: A Proven Performer in Challenging Conditions

Joining the Z8 is the Nikon D750, a camera renowned for its reliability and versatility in the field. With its robust build and weather-sealed construction, the D750 is well-equipped to handle the rigors of wildlife photography in the Masai Mara. Its fast and accurate autofocus system, coupled with impressive low-light performance, makes it the perfect companion for capturing spontaneous moments and dynamic wildlife encounters, ensuring that no opportunity is missed.

I carried 3 bodies for the trip and D750 did a great job as a companion camera and was used almost of 50% of the shots. I had this camera paired with 200-500 f5.6 most of the times and this combo worked great along with Z8 with a 70-200 2.8 lens. Even though this not a Mirrorless, it performed well and got a great success rate. Here are some shots by this combo.

Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 Lens: Bringing Distant Subjects Closer

Rounding out our kit is the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 lens, a telephoto powerhouse that brings distant subjects within reach. In the vast expanses of the Masai Mara, where wildlife often roams far and wide, having the ability to zoom in on distant subjects is invaluable. With its impressive reach and optical performance, the 200-500mm lens allows photographers to capture breathtaking close-ups of wildlife in stunning detail, from majestic lions to graceful giraffes.

Essential Gear Checklist for Wildlife Photography in Kenya's Masai Mara

Embarking on a wildlife photography expedition in the Masai Mara is a dream come true for many photographers. To ensure you're fully prepared to capture the wonders of this iconic landscape, here's a comprehensive checklist of essential gear to bring along, including a handy beanbag for stabilisation:

1. Camera Body:

- Nikon Z8 + D750 + D7100 (or equivalent high-resolution DSLR/mirrorless camera)

- Spare camera body (optional, for backup)

2. Lenses:

- Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens https://amzn.to/3IYf4dh

- Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 lens https://amzn.to/43DJ9IK

- Wide-angle lens (optional, for landscape shots)

- Teleconverter (optional, for extending reach)

3. Beanbag:

- A beanbag serves as a portable and versatile support for your camera when shooting from a vehicle. It provides stability for long lenses and reduces vibration, allowing for sharper images. Look for a beanbag specifically designed for wildlife photography with a sturdy construction and a non-slip base.

You can buy bean bag from Amazon if you wish to buy https://amzn.to/3TXloIr

4. Tripod:

- A sturdy tripod is essential for shooting in low light or when using slower shutter speeds. Choose a lightweight yet robust tripod that can withstand the rugged terrain of the Masai Mara. I would only recommend the use of tripod when you're alone or maybe 2 people in the jeep, else it may get very uncomfortable using a full tripod. Else, you can use the bean bags.

I used this carbon fiber light weight tripod during my trip. You may check out the specs at Amazon https://amzn.to/3x9oaBl. If you want additional discounts, you can ping me and I can help you get additional discounts direct from the distributor in India.

5. Camera Bag:

- A durable and weatherproof camera bag is essential for protecting your gear from dust, moisture, and bumps during transportation and while out in the field. Look for a bag with padded compartments and adjustable dividers to safely organize your equipment. I carried couple of bags to carry my gear securely in the flights and then in the safari vehicle. I had Vanguard bags which served me well and protected the gear.

6. Memory Cards:

- Bring multiple high-capacity memory cards to ensure you have enough storage space for all your photos. Opt for fast, high-quality cards with ample capacity to accommodate the large file sizes of high-resolution images. I had SanDisk SD Cards and ProGrade CF EXpress Cards. You can buy them from Amazon by clicking on link https://amzn.to/4cFOD9S

7. Batteries and Chargers:

- Carry several fully charged camera batteries and a reliable charger to keep your camera powered throughout the day. Consider investing in a portable power bank for charging on the go.

8. Lens Cleaning Kit:

- Dust and dirt are common hazards in the Masai Mara, so be sure to pack a lens cleaning kit to keep your lenses free from smudges and debris. Include a lens brush, microfiber cloth, and lens cleaning solution for thorough cleaning.

9. Binoculars:

- A pair of high-quality binoculars can enhance your wildlife viewing experience by allowing you to spot distant animals and observe their behavior in greater detail. Look for compact, waterproof binoculars with excellent optics for clear viewing.

10. Field Guide and Notebook:

- Bring along a comprehensive field guide to help you identify wildlife species and learn more about their habits and habitats. A notebook/iPad/Phone and pen are handy for jotting down observations and recording shooting settings for future reference.

11. Protective Gear for personal care:

- Don't forget to pack essential protective gear such as sunscreen, insect repellent, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun and insects during outdoor shoots.

12. Protective Gear for your camera gear:

   - Don't forget to pack essential protective gear for protecting your camera gear in the field. Masai Mara and other National parks can be very dusty and it would be critical to protect your camera and lenses from the dust and other elements during the game drives. I carried Dust covers for the cameras so that we can protect it from dust and Sun during the long and dusty game drives in the park. It also saved the gear from an unexpected downpour during the boat ride at Lake Naivasha. If we didn't had the waterproof cover, it would have been disastrous for the gear we had. Make sure you carry something to cover the gear and protect. Here are some links to the protective gear that you may buy from Amazon

12. Personal Essentials:

We also carried compressed face towels/tissues that can be used during the safari to stay clean :) https://amzn.to/3PJDdbg

By packing these essential items, including a reliable beanbag for stabilisation, you'll be well-equipped to embark on an unforgettable wildlife photography expedition in Kenya's breathtaking Masai Mara National Reserve. Happy shooting!
